After-School Tutoring on Fridays:
For the ninth year running, St. Matthew continues to offer after-school help with homework and tutoring in the different subject areas for students in the community (Inwood and Washington Heights).
Our tutors are bright young volunteers from Columbia University and Barnard College who dedicate their time and resources in giving back to the community.  They certainly inspire the students who come every Friday to receive the help that is needed for better grades in writing their individual success story that will in turn  inspire others.
This program was started by the Rev. Dr. Luther Kriefall during his chaplaincy at Columbia University under the auspices of Lutheran Ministries in Higher Education.  "Luke," who is now retired from active ministry, still accompanies campus volunteers every Friday in all kinds of weather and sometimes helps out when the need arises.  Justin Klien, a graduate student in Law at Columbia, is with us for the sixth year and coordinates this program along with Haley Zamer, a Barnard College undergrad, in getting volunteers to board the # 1 train "uptown" to 190th Street for this weekly session.  Friday Tutoring sessions start at 3:30pm and end at 5pm.
